Captain of Club
The Captain of Club is in charge of the overall administration of in the club. This includes:
- chairing committee meetings.
- corresponding with outside parties, e.g. the boatman, other captains, CUCBC, Conservators of the river Cam, British Rowing etc., regarding any issues that relate to both parties.
- overseeing all contact with college, particularly in relation to alumnae, funding, publicity and social events in college.
In years when a Captain of Boat or a Vice Captain is not elected, the Captain of Club will take on that role as well.
Captain of Boats
The Captain of Boats is in charge of the sport and training issues of the Club. She oversees all boats, but especially the 1st VIII. This includes:
- deciding on the training program for all the crews in terms of land training and water outings.
- making sure that competing crews are entered in races and that they have appropriate information about races, as well as finding bank parties for the races.
- ensuring that the MECBC squad develops in breadth and depth as a whole.
In years where no Lower Boats Captains have been elected the Captain of Boats will take on that role as well.
Vice Captain
The Vice Captain is an experienced member of the club who plays an important support role for the Captain(s). In particular:
- seeking sponsors and fundraising
- maintaining contact with alumnae
- coordinating the publicity of the club, e.g. updating website, Facebook page and College with recent news and results
- organising the biennial Neptunes Dinner for the boat club community (in conjunction with the Social Secretaries and the Fundraising Officer, if one is appointed for the year).
The VC also takes on the role of various Officers as necessary, as not all Officer roles may be filled in a year.
Junior Treasurer & Secretary
(Historically, these were separate roles, which were amalgamated in 2010.)
The Junior treasurer looks after the club’s finances. In particular
- writing and paying in cheques and keeping the accounts
- setting the annual budget
- playing an important part in deciding how much money will be spent and what on
The Secretary is responsible for
- taking minutes of committee meetings
- ordering rowing kit (and often crew stash)
Safety Officer
The Safety Officer looks after the safety of members of the boat club both on and off water. In particular
- carrying out the Annual Safety Audit for CUCBC and British Rowing
- restocking the first aid kit and replenishing various sticky tape and plasters
- ensuring that consent forms are filled in and kept properly.
This post must not be vacant due to British Rowing requirements. Even if no separate person is appointed, one of the committee has to be designated as the Safety Officer.
Lower Boat Captain(s)
Lower Boats’ Captains (LBCs) are responsible for Lower Boats, i.e. not 1st boat. Their job primarily involves teaching novices how to row, the main novicing term being Michaelmas. This role carries a serious time commitment for Michaelmas term.
If no LBC has been elected for the year, the work involved is handled by the Captain of Boats (with the support of the committee).
Social Secretaries
The Social Secretaries look after the social side of the club, organising the main events such as Fairbairns Dinner, Lent Bumps Dinner, Bumps BBQ and Bumps Breakfast (both after the Mays). They also organise regular formal swaps and other events such as cocktails.
If no Social Secretaries have been elected for the year, the work involved is shared among the committee.
Alumnae Officer, Publicity Officer, Fundraising Officer, Archiving Officer
These 4 officer roles represent slightly different focuses on the theme of building continuity and cohesion in the boat club community.
Alumnae: being a point of contact for alumnae who would like to get back in touch with the club. This role is suitable for someone who enjoy building personal relationships with the greater community of New Hall/Murray Edwards alumnae.
Publicity: overseeing or participating in the production of our termly newsletter The Neptunes, and likely be involved in writing for the website/Facebook page. This role is suitable for people who want to develop their publishing skills.
Fundraising: in charge of organising, with the Vice Captain and Social Secretaries, the biennial Neptunes Dinner for current members, alumnae and supporters. In general, this role aims to secure financial support from the boat club community for strategic development of the boat club. This may involve innovative fundraising events in the college, and also seeking support from corporate sponsors. If we already have a corporate sponsor, the fundraising officer is in charge of being the point of contact with the corporate sponsor, ensuring that we meet the requirements the sponsorship contract. This role is suitable for someone with perseverance and initiative.
Archiving: keeping a record of rowers, race results, and the increasing amounts of photos and videos that the club generates in its activities. This role may involve creating a scrap book or a photo album for the year. This role should add to the archives of the boat club that is currently held in the College Library. This role is suitable for people who want to leave a lasting legacy for the years of boat club members to come.
If any of these officers have not been elected for the year, the work involved will be handled by the Vice President.
Computing Officer
The computing officer keeps the website up to date with news, results, bulletins and helps organise kit orders. Experience in html, css, php or perl is helpful. However, even if you don’t know these right now, an interest in them will go much further than you think!
If no computing officer have been appointed for the year, the work involved is shared among the committee.
Training Officer
The training officer plans and leads appropriate training for the various boats. This role is particularly suitable for anyone with an interest in improving the Club’s fitness, particularly via circuit training and weights sessions.
If no training officer have been appointed for the year, training will be decided by the Captain of Boats after discussion with the coaches.
General Members
General members provide a range of support to the committee. They may be tasked with specific projects. In the past, this has included:
- maintaining contact with a friendly boat club
- securing trophy blades
- updating the boat club history section
- producing The Neptunes (now part of the Publicity Officer’s role)
There is a lot of scope to work on something that interests you as a General Member of the committee. The only requirement for this role is that you should attend boat club committee meetings (2-4 meetings termly) whenever possible. Depending on what tasks you take up, the time commitment can be very flexible.
