Why Row?
- Murray Edwards College Boat Club is the largest society in college with over 100 members and usually between 4 and 7 active crews.
- 50% of undergraduates in Cambridge try rowing at some point. Joining the boat club will allow you to become part of this community with its own special jargon and social scene.
- Only enthusiasm is required! We teach you everything from scratch.
- There is something for everyone. If you want to see Cambridge from the river, get some fresh air and some exercise, you can be a rower. If you enjoy giving orders more than following them, you can be a cox. Whether you want row competitively or just get some exercise and enjoy the experience there is something for you – every member of a crew is important!
- Even off water, you can contribute as bank party taking warm layers and photos, essential committee members, making contacts by being a social secretary or an alumni officer (lots of CV points and transferable skills!)
- By the end of your first novice term you will likely have a few races under your belt, and be able to go into a senior boat and move up the crews. In the last few years, a number of rowers who noviced at MECBC go on to the University Development Squad, and some eventually go on to trial for a place in the University teams.
- Like all good boat clubs, we have a very full social calendar for all those times when you’re off the river. Formal swaps, cocktails, dinners, BBQs and our Bumps Breakfast in May Week— just to name a few.
So like our Facebook page, and contact us to get our newest sign up form!
We also sometimes run a novice boat during Easter term, though you may have to wait until Michaelmas again before you can join in the excitement of racing.
